DAY 1-
CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT / ASTORIA
Motorcoach pick-up at the hotel 8:00 a.m. Leaving the Portland area we drive along the Columbia River on the Washington side to Dismal Nitch for a rest stop at a Lewis and Clark camp spot. We then head to Waikiki Beach for a picnic lunch, and to Cape Disappointment for a panoramic view of the Washington and Oregon coast and the infamous Columbia Bar. We stand 250 feet above the Pacific, where we are able to view shipping traffic and possibly the Coast Guard in training. The Interpretive Center there houses displays depicting the significant history of The Cape. This is where Lewis and Clark and The Corps of Discovery reached their goal of following the Columbia to the sea. We cross the four and half mile long Astoria Megler Bridge to Oregon, and stop in the historic river town of Astoria, where we stay two nights at the lovely riverside Holiday Inn Express. Dinner is on your own, with a wonderful variety of restaurants to choose from.

There will be time to walk through the forest to the canoe landing, helping us to imagine what life was like for these brave explorers. Back in Astoria, we take a driving tour of the pleasant Victorian District, climbing above town to the Astoria Column and wonderful views of the area. Astoria provides a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants. Lunch is on your own, with a full afternoon to explore the town and the exceptional Columbia River Maritime Museum. This is a world-class museum featuring a variety of boats, and quality displays on naval history, salmon fishing and the Coast Guard. Dinner on your own.
